We Say…

NOVA ONE, the musical pseudonym of Providence-based artist Roz Raskin, first emerged back in 2018 with the well-received EP, secret princess. Now two years later, Roz is gearing up to release the debut NOVA ONE album, lovable, an examination of, “queerness, femininity, and gender”, delivered through a beautiful combination of slinky 60’s pop, and lo-fi fuzz.

While lovable won’t land until the end of next month, NOVA ONE have already shared a couple of tracks from the record that serve as perfect introductions. The lead single, violet dreams, is NOVA ONE at their most dreamy, with a brilliantly repetitive hook so good, we actually woke up humming it at 4am last night. Most recently, Roz shared the title track, a slightly different beast with a crunchy lead-guitar line nodding to Neighbor Lady or Jenny Lewis’ rockier moments, as the vocal pleads with a lover who’s not emotionally available, before ultimately concluding that moving on might be the only answer. Digging into the world of NOVA ONE, this is music that slowly unveils itself, scratching away each layer to find there’s so much more lurking underneath, lovable is a record to live in and embrace, a new friendship to make that already feels like the start of something magical.

They Say…

FTR: For those who don’t know who are NOVA ONE?

NOVA ONE is a music project based out of providence, ri. We wear femme drag and I wrote this most recent album about my coming out process, heartbreak, and healing.

FTR: What can you remember about your first show?

I think the first show I went to was a Celine Dion concert. I remember thinking she looked so comfortable up there. It was right around the time titanic came out, big year for her.

At the first show I played, I remember feeling terrified since I was such a shy kid and the idea of anyone looking at me terrified me. I remember hearing the applause and feeling validated in that moment and thought, “I should definitely keep doing this”.

FTR: Why do you make music? Why not another art form?

Besides music, I also occasionally draw comics and paint. Generally, the importance of music creation and listening has been instilled in me since i was a young one. I have always been drawn to melody.

FTR: What can people expect from the Nova One live show?

Costumes, intensity, laughing, crying, conversations about the importance of inclusiveness at shows. I’ve been baring it all emotionally on stage recently. It’s been feeling really good.

FTR: What’s next for Nova One?

We are releasing our first full-length record with Community Records april 24th and will be touring to support the new music
