[PREMIERE] Corey Gulkin – Half Moon

Having previously shared music under the Corrina Rose moniker, Montreal’s Corey Gulkin shed their well-established pseudonym in favour of sharing music under their own name. After releasing the raw and intimate 2018 album, All the Things I’ll Forget, Corey recently returned with their new single Raya, the first taste of the upcoming record, Half Moon. Ahead of the album’s release this October by Anything Bagel, today Corey is premiering the LPs title track.

Described as, “a flagship for the album”, Half Moon introduces a record of tender and complex music, that aims to be, “explicit in its aim to unravel expectations”. Throughout the track, Corey leans on blurry imagery, a series of intimate snapshots that hint at deeper meaning whilst still leaving plenty left unsaid and open to personal interpretation.

Musically the track is just as hard to pin-down, there’s a lurching quality to the rhythm section, in particular the excellent bass-line, although it comes and goes at times the song settling into an easy hazy glide then slides back towards angularity. Corey’s guitar work is equally versatile, combining moments where they glide effortlessly, and moments where the playing becomes wild and expressive, crashing and clattering with an intensity reminiscent of the likes of Mothers or Squirrel Flower.

The track is accompanied by a video courtesy of filmmaker Nasuna Stuart-Ulin with special effects by Dustyn Lucas. Filmed in a patch of blossoming Japanese crabapple trees in Montreal’s Parc-Ex neighbourhood the video features Corey ripping a searing guitar solo while resting atop a single, floating flower petal. The video mirrors the unspoken, open-to-interpretation quality so evident in the music. There’s a real creativity to everything Corey Gulkin is doing right now, a songwriter not just finding their voice, but letting it soar, dip and dive wherever it wants to take them, and luckily for us, inviting us all along for this most intriguing ride.

Half Moon is out October 6th via Anything Bagel. For more information on Corey Gulkin visit https://www.coreygulkin.com/.
