An American musician, songwriter, and “technician of the sacred”, Adam Lytle has been honing his craft over a number of years leading the bands Quicksilver Daydream and Wild Leaves, sharing stages with Daniel Romano and Marlon Williams and appearing on a string of festival stages. All of that has perhaps been building to this moment, the release of his debut solo album, This Is The Fire, made with the help of Trey Pollard and Jonathan Schenke, and due to arrive this October. With excitement building for the record’s launch, today Adam is premiering his new single, At Your Command.
This Is The Fire’s opening track, At Your Command is a song of dedication, a love song not full of pining and desperation, but one where, “the lover brings something to the table. They know their strength and are ready to share it. Here, love is the acceptance of the good and bad with equanimity. A love that blossoms free of desire”. Throughout the track Adam seems to compare his love to the inimitable forces of nature, comparing them to the dawn as he offers to, “chase the dark away”, or the crashing ocean, “if I am the wave, you are the tide that controls me”. By digging into these fundamental comparisons, he seems to lift the song to an almost higher plain, digging into something archaic and elemental that seems to elevate the track beyond something as universally trifling as humanity.
Musically, while the influence of Leonard Cohen is writ large in the fluttering nylon-stringed guitar, Adam also brings some more modern influences the swelling orchestral flourishes nodding to early Fionn Regan or the majesty of Angel Olsen’s All Mirrors. The result is a piece that breathes fresh air through old lungs, that feels at once timeless and bristling with opportunity, a new voice that feels ready to make its mark.
This Is The Fire is out October 20th. For more information on Adam Lytle visit https://www.adamlytle.com/.
