[VIDEO PREMIERE] adults – Discipline

Describing themselves as, “four pals trying to find their way in a disintegrating world”, South London’s adults have been around for a number of years, releasing singles via Art Is Hard and For The Sake Of Tape, before self-releasing their debut EP The Weekend Was Always Almost Over, and catching the ear of Fika Recordings. In October 2022, they teamed up with the label to share their well-received debut album, For Everything Always. The band recently teamed up with DIY-pals Spank Hair for the split release …In The Big League, a four-track digital split EP, also released physically as a 20-page riso-printed zine. Today the band are premiering the accompanying video for one of their two contributions to the EP, Discipline.

An attempt the band say, at, “poppy and slightly polished”, Discipline as with its counterpart Trouble, is an indie-pop song “about love, anxiety, sadness and lying to yrself”, or in other words a track that picks up exactly where For Everything Always left us. The track enters on a rather thrilling slamming of drums and squealing of guitars, before settling into a driving yelping crunch, reminiscent of the likes of The Spook School or Eureka California.

Particularly wonderful is the dual vocals of the chorus, as the calm lead finds a harmony of sorts with the howling, anguished backing, “I try to say, I am fine, and you try to say that you’re not”. It’s almost like the inner and outer self battling for a space on the tape, outward indifference versus the visceral howl of the soul. With the promise of much more to come, this is a thrilling glance into where adults’ music is now, and even more excitingly where it might go next.
