Hailing from the Cornish creative hub of Falmouth, Low Harness formed in 2023 when four members met through working at Penryn DIY hub the Fish Factory Arts Space, with songwriters Hannah Gledhill and Martin Pease bonded over their shared penchant for alternative tunings. Signed to the prolific Krautpop! label, the band’s debut album Salvo will arrive next week, with a string of tour dates booked to mark the occasion. Ahead of the release today the band are sharing their new single, Bloodplay.
A song Hannah suggests is about, “the lengths people go to for pleasure, to escape from the banality of everyday existence and act out their most subversive urges“, Bloodplay pictures living freely, letting your most uninhibited thoughts become your reality, as Hannah sings, “it’s the best day for some bloodsport, do I give in to what I asked for, take my hand here in my bedroom, teach a lesson, choose your weapon”. Hannah further explains, “even if we do not give in to these fantasies, or are too afraid to realise them: a place exists in our imagination where we cannot be judged playing them out“.
Much of Salvo was written during a week’s residency at local venue The Cornish Bank before the band took the tracks to a 19th-century chapel to record. On Bloodplay this seems to lend the track a certain earthy quality, as rumbling drums and prominent bass offer a gutsy contrast to Hannah’s airy silken vocal. Towards the song’s close the guitars really come to the fore a squalling instrumental howl that sounds always on the verge of collapse and then satisfyingly does, the song ends like a wave crashing down on the shore.
The accompanying video featuring drag artist and, “passionate advocate for Falmouth’s queer community“, Pink Baby, was shot in an abandoned leisure centre, “which served as a perfect fantasy backdrop for this song where the subject was able to daydream in complete isolation“. Check out the video below, and get yourself suitably excited for Salvo’s intriguing and thankfully imminent arrival.
