Sparrow is the new musical project from Brooklyn based songwriter, Matthew Anderson. Although Matthew has already released a number of records under various guises, he is set to release the debut Sparrow EP this month and today we’re sharing the first taste of it, with the video for upcoming single, Homeless Heart.
Citing influences including Sufjan Stevens and Radiohead, Sparrow’s sound is one of delicate melodies, slowly unfurling musical landscapes, and gentle drifting melancholy. Homeless Heart builds around a distant but insistent piano line and Matthew’s aching, echoing vocal. There’s a touch of The Antlers in the minimal instrumentation, while the soaring, almost choral vocals bring to mind Money’s Jamie Lee or Perfume Genius at his most stripped back. The accompanying visuals, directed by filmmaker Matthew Taylor, invite us into a world of snow-covered and eerily empty urban landscapes, a perfect accompaniment to the song’s nagging sense of an unspoken, discomforting truth. A highly promising first offering, Sparrow seems to emerge into the world fully formed, and capable of great musical deeds.
Sparrow’s self titled debut EP is out March 13th.
