Get To Know – Annie Taylor

We Say…

Annie Taylor was an American high-school teacher who, on her 63rd birthday, in an attempt to find fame and avoid the poor house in later life, made the bold decision to throw herself off Niagara Falls in barrel, and became the first person to survive the trip. Annie Taylor is also the name of a four-piece Swiss band, led by songwriter Gini, who walk the lines between grunge, psych and delightfully dreamy pop.

The band formed back in 2016, when Gini, “forced her flatmates to rehearse in their living room until the neighbors either joined or shut up”. Some three years later, the quartet find themselves on Taxi Gauche Records, and later this month they’ll release their excellent debut EP, Not Yours! The record is an intriguing five-track introduction to Annie Taylor’s musical world, from opening track, Under Your Spell, that sounds like Pip Blom covering The “In” Crowd through to the surfy title track and the gloomier, more enigmatic, Warpaint-like tones of recent single S.L.E.E.P. Not Yours! is a hugely promising introduction, one almost as impressive as throwing yourself over Niagara Falls in a barrel, and we’d wager a lot less painful.

FTR: For those who don’t know who are Annie Taylor?

Annie Taylor is a four-piece, female fronted grunge, psychedelic rock n’roll band from Zurich. We formed a band called Annie Taylor as an homage to the enigmatic woman who jumped the Niagara Falls in a barrel and survived, back in 1901.

FTR: What can you remember about your first show?

We were very lucky and got invited to play at our favourite bar (Indy Bar!) in a supercool snowboard place in Laax. A lot of friends showed up, which made me feel super nervous! But luckily everything went fine and we played a few times there since then, where I was able to enjoy it a bit more. For the guys it was more chill, they have already played many shows with other bands before.

FTR: Why do you make music? Why not another art form?

Since I have a lot of things going on in my head all the time, I feel like music is a way to express my emotions and get my thoughts sorted out. I guess it’s some kind of therapy. A few years ago I used to draw a lot, sometimes many hours per day, but since I don’t have a lot of space in my apartment anymore, I started to spend more time at the rehearsal room. To hang out with the boys and making music together was so much fun at the end, that this was everything that I wanted to continue doing.

FTR: What can people expect from the Annie Taylor live show?

Come and see for yourselves!
