Based out of New Cross in South East London, The Hannah Barberas sprang into life back in 2019 with a string of homemade, self-released EPs. In 2020, they teamed up with Spinout Nuggets to release their debut album, Into The Wild, their take on distinctly DIY indie-pop winning fans from Gideon Coe to Austin Town Hall. Three years on, the band recently shared their latest home-recorded long-player, Fantastic Tales of the Sea, and today they’re premiering the video that accompanies the album’s opening track, You’re So?!

While Fantastic Tales of the Sea seems to pick up where previous The Hannah Barberas’ material left off, there’s also a distinct dash of progress here. The back-and-forth vocals of Lucy Formolli and Damien Devaney remain to the fore, as does the bounding rhythm section, yet in the saxophone-infused outro and upbeat, lustful lyrics there’s something entirely fresh.

Discussing the track the band have spoken of the influence of Cole Porter, and the track certainly possesses some of the same suggestive playfulness, “you look so cool with your hair like that, always look like you’ve just got outta the sack”. As the song descends into disbelief and dreams of debauchery, the sentences become half-finished, urges over-riding good sense, “when you call me I don’t walk I run, you’re too good looking to be this fun”. Classic indie-pop that’s not afraid to dip its toe into an array of other musical ponds, the latest incarnation of The Hannah Barberas might just be their most intriguing move to date.
