LRN GRN is the solo project of Texan musician Lauren Green, best known as the front woman of fuzz-rockers Mirror Travel. Next week LRN GRN will team up with the Keeled Scales imprint to put out her latest offering. A lathe cut 7″, featuring two brand new tracks, No Water and Only Light – the latter of which we’re premiering here today. This will serve as the first new LRN GRN music since 2013’s Grape Perfume EP.
LRN GRN is a completely solo project, Lauren writing, performing and recording every aspect of the track from her current home in the atmospheric sounding settings of the high desert of New Mexico. Lauren even made the record’s artwork herself using a hand carved woodblock print.
Only Light is a minimal slice of slow-moving electronica; gentle processed beats fluttering beneath warm pulsing keys and numerous layers of Lauren’s echoing, distant vocal. The whole track has something of the gentle melancholy of Natasha Khan or Perfume Genius. Explaining the track, Lauren suggests Only Light, “explores the journey to unknown dusty corners of the mind, and the thin veil of reality and fiction that solitude can force”. This solitude is equally present in the minimalist blending of electronic and organic instrumentation, serving to further highlight the narrative of a battle between reality and fabrication. This is a spell binding and hypnotic return, and alongside a handful of live dates in the US, serves as a tantalising hint at what LRN GRN might do next.
No Water/Only Light is out May 12th via Keeled Scales. Click HERE for more information on LRN GRN.
