Average Sex formed when Tottenham’s Sam O’Donovan met Parisian, Laetitia Bocquet, at a Burger Records showcase in August last year. They spent the summer writing what they describe as, “too-catchy-for-words ideas”, before recruiting three further members to flesh those ideas out into songs. Working with producer Ric James, the first fruits of those sessions is out today in the shape of new single, We’re Done, the video for which we’re premiering today.
We’re Done is a sweet melodic rush; huge roaring choruses interspersed by verses of steady, simplistic guitar lines, that merge with steady rattling drum beats and Laetitia’s immensely powerful vocal. Lyrically, it’s a tongue in cheek angry yelp, bringing to mind the playful wordplay of Tacocat or Gurr, as in the chorus Laetitia sings, “you act like I’m the crazy one since I slashed your tires, and you won’t return my text since I set your dog on fire”. Having already supported the likes of Martha and Gurr, as well as selling out headline shows at The Victoria in Dalston, Average Sex are a band making gentle waves on the DIY scene. Sexy sure, but this sounds anything but average.
