In the sort of rock’n’roll story that seems almost too good to be true, garage-punk band Chemtrails first emerged as a 5-piece live band back in 2016, and were signed up by their label, PNKSLM Recordings, after their first ever gig, at Trans Pride Brighton. Since then, the prolific band have churned out a series of critically-acclaimed releases from their living room, drawing praise from around the globe. After the live band parted ways to pursue other projects, Mia Lust and Laura Orlova, the songwriting duo at the heart of Chemtrails, recently relocated to Manchester, and recruited a new band. The band are set to release their latest album, The Peculiar Small of the Inevitable in May, and today we’re sharing the first single from it, Paranoiacs.

Paranoiacs in many ways picks up where Chemtrails left off, with the bands winning fusion of 60’s psych and garage punk remaining front and centre. It’s a track that is resplendent with fuzzy guitar-lines, irrefutable hooks and Mia Lust’s ear for a stunning melody; coming across like a brilliant mid-point of Deerhoof, Blondie and The Lovely Eggs.

Lyrically, the track seems to exist in a place of insecurity, feeling paranoid by the confidence of others and trapped by your own doubts, “no use in crying over milk turned black when you’re stuck in the sap and sinking”. While alienation and doubt are to the lyrical-fore, Paranoiacs still manages to sound bold, there’s a focus to the rambunctious garage thrills, offering a fresh burst of excitement from one of the country’s most intriguing bands.
