[PREMIERE] Lightning Cult – La Brea

Working out of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Lightning Cult are the duo of Mike Marchant and Luke Bern Carr. The pair first emerged in the Summer of 2018 with their debut EP, Burner. The band followed that up with last year’s Ether Waves, and are currently building towards their soon to be announced debut album, and today we’re sharing their latest single, La Brea.

Discussing the track, songwriter Mike has suggested La Brea, “explores the intoxicating effects of new love”. The track sets those themes to a bright-buzzing slice of motorik-pop, nodding to the likes of Stereolab or the vastly underrated Secret Machines.

While La Brea is driven by the consistent hum of the propulsive drum-beat, it’s the loose clatter of guitars and electronic buzz that add the texture that makes it shine. The music creates a hazy atmosphere in which the vocal melodies can dance, sometimes drifting back into the mix, before puncturing through into a position of prominence. If this is a sign of where Lightning Cult’s debut album is headed, it could just be something truly special.

La Brea is out tomorrow. Click HERE for more information on Lightning Cult.
