Based out of Leith, The Son(s) have been collaborating with the excellent Olive Grove Records, home to the likes of Carla J. Easton and Chrissy Barnacle, ever since their 2011 debut album. Nine years and two records later, the band are set to return in November with their latest offering, The Creatures We Were Before We Are Ghosts. Recorded back in March in Leith Theatre, the record is the first produced with the band’s current live line-up, which has seen them support the likes of Kathryn Joseph and RM Hubbert. Today we’re premiering the second track to be shared from the record, My Starry Eyed.

Appearing towards the end of the album, My Starry Eyed has a distinctly Autumnal feel as a series of sustained piano chords are picked out, accompanied by rich, caramel-hewn vocal tones. Falling between early Perfume Genius and Angelo De Augustine, the whole thing seems to bring a chill to the air, even in the relative warmth of early September, you can almost hear the leaves changing to brown, and the threat of frost creeping in.

Lyrically, My Starry Eyes is not a track of conclusions, instead it is one that offers more questions than answers. The starry eyed someone of the title, seems to have dropped off the radar, “where’d you keep yourself all these years?“, they ask, before the piano picks up pace on the repeated questions, “was it you?” There’s a mystery to the words, a gentle intrigue that as a listener pulls you in, and invites you to draw your own conclusions. The Son(s) always seem to carry a certain conundrum, and this feels just the same, an intriguing puzzle piece, when The Creatures We Were Before We Are Ghosts arrives later this month, we can’t wait to fit it all together and see just how beautiful the complete picture is.
