Unlike most of the musicians we cover, Joe Holt is a qualified musician. A folk songwriter, Joe graduated from Berklee College of Music back in 2015 and has been releasing songs and touring across America ever since. Joe released his second album, The Person I Admire, last year, and has rapidly returned with his new single, Something Louder, which we’re sharing here today.
Something Louder is a song about pursuing your passion, about the uncertainty of trying to achieve your dreams and battling against a society that wants you to conform and settle into a comfortable office job.
Musically, it’s an energetic slice of alt-folk, recalling acts like Dan Mangan or Withered Hand, Something Louder builds around impassioned vocals, rapid fire acoustic guitars and rolling, energetic drums. Throughout the track, Joe comes across as a songwriter in love with his craft and as he sings, “all I’ve ever wanted was to pay back the debt I owe to music when it saved me from those adolescent struggles long ago”, it serves as a reminder of just how powerful music can be. Existing seemingly outside musical trends or the industry machine, Joe Holt is a songwriter who seems to be doing music simply for love of it.
