Recent interviewee‘s on this site, Falmouth’s Holiday Ghosts are quickly proving to be one of the year’s breakthrough acts. Their well-received second album, West Bay Playroom, has caught the ear of many with its versatile, retro sound and playful lyricism. Today marks the start of the band’s UK tour, and ahead of that we’re sharing the video to their latest single, Just A Feeling.
The album’s sashaying stand-out, Just A Feeling, is pitched somewhere between a country hoedown and The Velvet Underground in their more sun-kissed moments. The lithe lead-guitar line is combined with a wamping bass-line and Katja’s breezy vocal delivery – they even throw a honky-tonk piano in at the end to complete the track’s brilliant bar-room swagger.
Lyrically, Just A Feeling seems to hint at the difficulty in growing up on the outside, as Katja sings, “I don’t want to be anything other than what they say looks alright”, sounding like the idea of fitting in might just be the worst thing imaginable. The accompanying video matches the tongue in cheek lyricism, as Katja throws her finest shapes to camera as her bandmates quietly crack on with a game of cards in the background. Just A Feeling, like much of the West Bay Playroom, is a melding of musical worlds, a place where the joyous instrumental swing only paints half the picture. Holiday Ghosts have created a world you just want to dive into and explore, and in doing so made one of the year’s finest records to date.
