Get To Know – Kate Teague

We Say…

Originally from the stupidly fun to say Mobile, Alabama, although now based out Oxford, Mississippi, Kate Teague emerged into the musical world back in 2018 with a trio of well received singles. Kate recently returned with her first offering of 2019, the brooding indie brilliance of In Our Element, a track rather counter-intuitively about being out of your element.

Kate recalls how she, “wrote this song in response to completely misinterpreting someone’s body language at a series of parties. I began falling in love with the idea that someone was falling in love with me, but I ultimately realized it was all in my head.” The track plays out with all the wooziness of a love song, yet in Kate’s doubt-filled, Sharon Van Etten-like vocal you can also hear all that unease, all that doubt and insecurity. We may only have a handful of singles to go on so far, yet Kate Teague feels like an artist on the verge of something rather special, a musician with enough talent to take her wherever she wants to go.

FTR: For those who don’t know who is Kate Teague?

I’m originally from Mobile, AL, but I moved to Oxford, Mississippi for college and have lived here now for eight years. I have a dog named Benson and I like rom coms.

FTR: What can you remember about your first show?

I think it was for my dad’s 50th birthday party. I was playing alone and I played basically all 2000’s indie covers. It made everyone super bummed and I had about four of his friends come up to me after and ask me why I didn’t play any upbeat songs. It was sick.

FTR: Why do you make music? Why not another art form?

I think music for me has always been at the forefront of my life. Listening to it, learning about it and playing it is really all I’ve ever known. It was always around my household. My dad use to pay me a dollar if I knew the name of the song and the artist, and thus began the start of me making nickels and dimes off music 🙂

FTR: What can people expect from the Kate Teague live show?

Hopefully 25 minutes of an honest performance.

FTR: What’s next for Kate Teague?

I am working to finish up five more songs that I recorded in February and will be releasing a batch of those tunes this summer. I also hope to do another tour this summer as well.
